On July 18, 1969, Ted Kennedy took a wrong turn, both literally and figuratively. When his Oldsmobile went into the water on Chappaquiddick Island on that fateful night, there were two people inside, he and Mary Jo Kopechne. Ted alone emerged from the murky waters alive. It remains a mystery as to why he left her there and walked past several houses on his way back to the house party they had left earlier. Ted Kennedy lost any hope of ever becoming president of the United States because of that wrong turn but that pales in comparison to what the Kopechne family lost.
