In 1983, an American professor invited a graduate student, Oliver, to live in his northern Italian villa with his family while working on a book. It is a tradition that his 17-year-old son, Elio, who is an introverted genius with a mind that makes him adult-like in many ways, had grown passionately jealous of over the years. The two young men are inexplicably drawn to one another and spend the summer enjoying local delights, the countryside, their Jewish heritage and unexpected romantic feelings.
